When is it helpful?
Family therapy brings together several members of the same family. It is recommended when a child has significant relationship, developmental, behavioural or eating difficulties. It also helps during a separation, a divorce or custody questions, to support the children through these stages.
The principle: a child's distress is often a sign of an imbalance in the whole family system. What affects one member affects the others, so the work focuses on all the interactions.
Two approaches
Systemic therapy
It sees the family as a system and seeks to restore balance by working on communication between its members.
Psychoanalytic family therapy
It sheds light on conflicts between family members, especially what parents project from their own history onto their children, and conflicts handed down through the generations.
In practice
Ideally the whole family (parents, siblings, grandparents) takes part in the first sessions, then only the key people. Sessions last about 1h30, once or twice a month depending on needs, in a setting where everyone has room to speak.
